PEX pipes for plumbing systems of buildings

Pex Plumbing systems are pressure-free buildings. This creates the illusion of the possibility of a simpler half-phase as to the choice of materials for manufacture of sewer pipes and fittings, as well as to the design and construction of sewerage from the buildings of these pipes.

Meanwhile, in the process of exploitation is the plumbing system are the most “unpleasant” of systems engineering equipment of buildings: the widespread rubbish accumulated drainage pipes leading to flooding basements of buildings with liquid waste, due to intermittent exhaust parts sewer risers are failures of hydraulic valves in sanitary and partings of toxic and explosive sewer gases into the premises where people reside; fumes in sewer systems and wells, including the yard drain, resulting in the death of untrained staff, etc.

Reliability of sewerage systems depends on many factors, of which one of the key is the quality of pipes, fittings and accessories. Plays a substantial role as the calculation of systems and quality installation of pipelines.

It should be emphasized that the piping systems, drainage buildings operate in a rather complex mode. This includes an endless dump waste water in different quantities, and constantly changing the temperature of the liquid (from +4 to +95 ° C) is, finally, should apply to waste water, which included not only contains the components of the effluent, but and foreign objects (construction and other debris, food waste, rags, toys, etc.), in 95 percent of the cases is the cause of clogged.

Therefore, to the pipes for plumbing systems of buildings certain requirements: they must not be subject to corrosion, such as steel pipe, the inner surface must be smooth enough, and they should be fairly easy, unlike cast iron pipes, their walls must not be exposed to the gas corrosion, as is the case with reinforced concrete pipes, they should not be so fragile as asbestos cement pipes. In addition, they must have reliable tight connection, easy to mount and unmounted, and serve at least 50 years.

After a long search for the global construction practice was such a pipe – it is certainly pipes of pex materials. If we recall that the system in-house plumbing appeared in the late 70-ies of the XIX century, and the widespread use of PEX pipes began in the early 50-ies of XX century, we can conclude that the search for the optimum material has spent nearly 80 years.

Perhaps as a result of research will find other, more effective materials.

In the Soviet Union began the application of PEX pipes in the sewerage systems of buildings should be allocated to 1956, when the homes of Seattle have been used polyethylene pipe and fittings. Serial application of these pipes began in the mid 60-ies.

Despite the fact that the replacement of sewerage systems iron sewer pipes and fittings for pipes and fittings are made of polyethylene of low pressure was a huge step forward, quickly emerged and disadvantages of the latter. First of all, it should be noted that the elasticity of polyethylene pipes for long storage leads to deformation of their smooth ends, ie turn them into an ellipse, while the tops are kruglotsilindricheskimi. In this regard, the production assembly jobs have problems associated with the return of the modified form of smooth pipe ends to kruglotsilindricheskoy form. Second, PEX tubes are recommended in the sewerage systems of buildings at the permanent waste no more than 60 “C. At the present time, the massive introduction into the life of the citizens of washing machines and dishwashers, which give a sufficiently long run-off with temperature 95oS use of polyethylene pipes becomes problematic.

With regard to fire safety of buildings, which use PEX pipes, this problem is common to all types of PEX pipes, and below we look at it in more detail.

It should be noted that, since the mid 70-ies, in the mass construction of sewerage systems of residential and public buildings are being introduced faster pace pipes and fittings of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In particular, in Seattle’s construction of widely used products of the Finnish company Uponor (now one of the most reputable and largest global companies – manufacturers of PEX pipes and fittings), and then, with putting into operation of chemical plant Dorogomilovsky NGO “PEX” (Seattle) – products of this plant.

It is believed that at present in USA to 90% of the plumbing systems of buildings of various functions have a plumbing system of PVC pipes and fittings. Unlike polyethylene pipes PVC pipes are rigid, their smooth ends during storage does not lose kruglotsilindricheskoy form, they are simply installed and removed with them easily enough to withstand the design gradients gravity networks.

However, as polyethylene pipes, PVC pipes are recommended for the transportation of waste water at a temperature no higher than 60 ° C, so in this case, there is the same problem with the mass introduction of washing machines and dishwashers.

An alternative to PVC pipes were tubes made of polypropylene, which appeared on the US market in the beginning of the 90 goals the last century. These pipe systems are designed for domestic plumbing transportation perennial with a temperature of 80 ° C. Within 5 minutes they keep the temperature of 100 ° C without disturbing the rigid pipes. Polypropylene Pipes – the same tough as PVC pipes, they are just as easily mounted and dismounted and keep the project grade.

Design and installation of domestic plumbing from the PEX pipes are sufficiently detailed regulatory and technical support. This SNIP 2.04.01-85 ‘Internal water supply and sewerage of buildings “, SP 40-102-2000

“Design and installation of pipelines for water supply and sewerage systems from pex materials”, SP 40-107-2003 “Design, installation and maintenance of systems of internal sewerage BB polypropylene pipes, GOST 22689.0 – 22689.2-89″ Polyethylene pipes and sewer fittings to them ” as well as numerous technical conditions of companies – manufacturers of PEX pipes and fittings.

In accordance with one of the last sets of rules at the federal level SP 40-102-2000 “plumbing systems of buildings” in the design should keep in mind sewers designed for the transportation of waste water at a constant temperature above 75 ° C and, briefly, at least 1 min – with a temperature of not less than 90 ° C (Section 4.1.1.). Since the pipe made of polyethylene and PVC are designed for constant temperature sinks 60oC, Gosstroi USA directs builders on pipes made of polypropylene.

It should be noted that long before the release of SP 40-102-2000 leading foreign firms began to produce pipes and fittings for drainage systems inside is made of polypropylene. These firms include the Finnish company Uponor, a German company Ostendorf, Italian firms Martoni, Co.ES and Redi. In the late 90-ies they were joined by the US company NPO Stroypolimer and Sinikon.

The main legislative instrument for designing sewerage systems of buildings – SNIP 2.04.01-85. “Its rules apply to residential and public buildings up to 25 floors, inclusive, and the administrative buildings up to 40 meters. These rules are consistent with SUPEN Soviet Interior Ministry and provide the necessary weight requirements for fire safety knowledge, which use PEX pipes – Polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC.

The first two belong to the class of polyolefins – Macromolecular compounds obtained by polymerization of unsaturated hydrocarbons, olefins. Poly-olefins are flammable, combustible materials, they burn in the flame zone, and outside the polyethylene ignited at a temperature of 310 – 340 ° C, tubes made of polypropylene are inflammable. Rigid PVC refers to the group and the slow-inflammable materials. Ignite it with great difficulty in the area of the fire. Outside PVC flame goes out.

The main requirement of fire protection – to prevent the spread of fire from room to room or from floor to floor. The spread of fire may contribute to PEX pipes, which are burning, that is, the pipe of polyolefins.

In 1985-1986. SRI specialists Mosstroya and All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Fire Defense (VNIIPO) in the village Nekrasovka Seattle region and in the range VNIIPO performed three series of fire tests of sewerage from polyethylene and PVC pipes. As a result of the investigations carried out have been formulated and incorporated in SNIP 2.04.01-85 fire regulations laying of PEX pipe systems, drainage of fuel (polyethylene, polypropylene) and noncombustible (PVC) materials in vertical and horizontal sections. Strict adherence to these rules removes restrictions on the use of PEX pipes in the sewerage systems of buildings up to 75 m, with regard to building height exceeding 75 m (400 m), who began to erect in Seattle in recent years, the possibility of using them in PEX pipes require reasoned discussion in this article is not considered.

In our view, more relevant question is about the quality of PEX pipes and fittings are supplied to the US market. The technological process of production is no detail – it is important to the quality of processing equipment (extruders, injection molding), the quality of the raw material (and therefore the requirement for incoming inspection of this quality must necessarily be present in the standard or technical conditions for production of pipes and fittings), constant control over the production process, a permanent laboratory control of finished products, etc. Unfortunately, in the US market can be found pipes and fittings, with different wall thickness, ovality, wall thickness is too small, the violation tolerance (smooth end of one pipe can not be entered into the socket and the other, etc.).

Builders who care about the quality of constructed facilities (and, hence, its reputation) prefer building materials (including pipes, fittings, accessories) reputable manufacturers, proven in the US market. Given the huge market demand for pipes and fittings, we can only welcome the construction of factories in USA for their production, supported by advanced foreign firms. As one of the most recent examples include a workshop for the production of polypropylene pipes for plumbing systems of buildings commissioned in the current year JSC “Santehcomplect” with the active support of the German company Ostendorf, which has worked well in the US market.

Production of pipes and pipeline parts of polypropylene has great prospects of production in USA. Currently, there is a reserve unmet demand for polypropylene products, as evidenced by the steady increase in the share of imports in USA behold.

It is believed that the increase in the production of pipes and pipeline fittings domestic producers will lead to lower prices for these products with its consistently high quality.

Preventing freezing of your PEX plumbing pipes

There are some situations that will bring some clogging to your pipes and one of the most severe one is pipe freeze. This usually happens during the winter season where the pipes get exposed to the environment in which the temperatures go way below the freezing point of water. Whether the pipe is a PEX pipe, or it is a galvanized one, at some point, all of them will get their content freezing, thus causing some clogging in the system. There are some measures that can be taken in order to prevent these pipes from such disappointments.  The following are some of the examples.

1. In case of a prolonged period without using the system, it is safer to cut the supply from the main supply. During vacations, make sure that all water inlets are turned off just for the sake of the PEX piping

2.         Some of your PEX pipes can be passing through some areas that can be exposed to chilly air. Such places as garages should be kept locked whenever they are not in use.

3.         In the same line as the above, be advised to keep the doors of your kitchen cabinets and bathroom storage areas open. This is because the house may contain warmer air than the water in the pipes that usually pass through these areas. By opening the doors, the PEX piping gets exposed to contact with air. Carefully keep any harmful chemicals away from the reach of children.

4.         Leave some trickling in your tap. This may seem controversial, and a waste of resources but a lot more can be wasted in clogged up pipes. The drip in one pipe will cause significant water motion that triggers energy in the system, keeping the water in the pipes at above freezing point.

5.         Do a random check of the house and its environs. Any noticeable places which need to, be insulated should be done so immediately. Hot water PEX pipes will also need to be insulated.

6.         Make sure to install fittings that accommodate insulators in your construction procedures.

Battle: PEX vs Copper

The battle is on between PEX tubing (or plumbing if you like) and Copper tubing. Most people have already been swayed to the PEX corner by cheaper and easier installation as well as effectiveness even in acidic conditions. This round is for the few skeptics who may still remain.

With PEX plumbing, do not have to worry about vandals who like digging up cables and tubing. It may seem like a laughable problem now but it would not be so funny, when compelled to go without water, for weeks after sections of your plumbing disappear overnight. Though this problem is more common with copper tubing, metals in general are never quite safe unlike PEX which is of no value.

As environmental temperatures change, so do those of water varying from normal room temperature to extremely hot or extremely cold. Copper tubing is not exceeding accommodative of these changes. The pipes tend to weaken due to the constantly changing temperatures and can even end up bursting. PEX tubing, on the other hand, comfortably expands and contracts in line with temperatures making it a better suited option.

For any environmentalists who may be crying foul over the fact that PEX tubing is essentially made of plastic, the fantastic news is that PEX tubing can be recycled in not just one but three ways-thermally, chemically and mechanically. Take your pick; stick to PEX tubing and save planet Earth.

With durability that can span at least 50 years, PEX piping is less likely to spring a leak than Copper piping. However, as the plumbing eventually wears down over time, some sections may need to be replaced. In the case of Copper tubing, the plumbing may have to be treated chemically to ensure that there is no residue left from soldering the (numerous) joints. Replacing PEX tubing is as easy as installing it-fewer connections = less joints = less soldering = you happy.

Sadly PEX tubing is not infallible. One of the greatest drawbacks is that it has to be kept away from direct sunlight due to its plastic nature and can therefore, not be used outside. All things said and done it are rather obvious, that the pros outweigh the cons by far. It shouldn’t be too presumptuous then to declare PEX piping / plumbing the outright winner of Round 2 and this fight in general. Wasn’t much a fight, was it?

PEX plumbing installation

One of the biggest advantages of PEX tubing or plumbing over brass piping is how easy it is to install and maintain. Nevertheless, there are certain things that every homeowner needs to know and remember even as when re-plumbing your piping and switch to PEX from brass.

Brass pipes have thinner walls than PEX pipes which results in decreased water pressure, since the water has a larger area to flow through. With this in mind, it is usually a brilliant idea to replace brass pipes with PEX tubing that is one size larger, for example, use 1/2” PEX tubing for ¼” brass tubing.

Some of the tools that are likely to be needed include PEX crimp fittings, full-circle PEX crimping tool, shut off valves, flexible tubing cutter, PEX supply pipe and transition fittings. Do not cut corners when it comes to using the right tools. Cheap or inappropriate tools will result in poor connections and, an ineffective piping system that will ultimately cost more to fix than what would have been used originally with the right equipment.

PEX tubing makes use of crimp-ring or compression system. This ensures that the connections are sealed tightly and drastically reduces the chances of future leakages. The crimp-ring should ideally be placed 1/8” to ¼” from the end of the pipe. Use of measurements that are not within this range is likely to result in a weak connection that will ultimately end up leaking. Hose clamps should not be used in place of crimp-rings.

The crimping tool must be used at a 90 degree angle otherwise the ribs will not be fully covered, and the piping will get dents in it.

Ensure that the pinch or crease PEX tubing is not folded while handling them. Also, take care not to walk on it.

Welding PEX pipes does not usually require dire precautionary measures other than the usual care that needs to be taken with the equipment used. The process hardly has any significant, unpleasant side effects since it is normally not noisy and produces little dirt. Soldering usually takes up around 220V.

All the joint work must be given a second look before the plumbing can be declared done. Each tube ending should have an appropriate crimp. The crimp-ring will be bent out of shape and will not give a consistent crimp if it was not covered well by the crimping tool. Some of the fitting ribs may also be left exposed if the tubing is not properly cut.

Happy plumbing (with PEX, of course)!

Tankless Water Heaters: What Can They Do for YOU?

Would you like to save up to 50% on your next water heating bill and have an endless supply of hot water?

ON-DEMAND, INSTANT HOT WATER WITH TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

With tankless water heaters you can enjoy and endless supply of instant, on-demand hot water 24 hours a day. Water is instantly heated as it flows through the tankless water heater but only for the time you are using it. When the hot water tap is turned off it closes immediately. Conventional tank water heaters operate differently in that they will heat water temperatures in the tank to a preferred temperature setting despite if you are using the water or not. The temperature is typically much higher in a tank than anyone could tolerate because cold water is added to the hot water, resulting in standby losses.

SAVE SPACE with COMPACT DESIGN

Another benefit of tankless water heaters is you will no longer need an extra room to house your bulky conventional tank heater. Tankless water heaters are about the size of a phone book and can be hung on the wall or installed under sinks or placed in closets.

SAVE ENERGY – SAVE $’s – SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT

Unlike tankless water heaters where the water temperature is controlled with a dial, conventional tank water heaters are typically set between 120 – 140F or 50 – 60C. While this is much too hot for people to use, it is necessary to overheat the water in order to have a sufficient supply of hot water. Cold water is added to the overheated water in order for it to be comfortable. Standby losses are eliminated with tankless water heaters because they provide hot water when needed, without storage.

INCREASED LIFE EXPECTANCY with TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

The life expectancy of tankless water heaters is typically much longer than conventional tank water heaters because they are less subject to corrosion. Tankless water heaters generally last 25-30 years whereas traditional heaters have a life expectancy of only about 10 years.

Unfortunately, most tanks, once they have reached the end of this short service life, are destined for the landfill – not exactly an environmentally-friendly or long-term cost-effective solution.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY

In North America there are about 4,000 injuries related to incidences where people have been scalded by overheated water in conventional tank water heaters. Keep you and your family safe using tankless water heaters.

Legionnaire’s bacteria are found in virtually every buildings water supply. Legionnaire’s disease is a type of pneumonia that affects the lungs and affects thousands in the U.S. alone every year. The bacteria only become potentially lethal when water sits for extended periods of time at higher temperatures. Unfortunately conventional tank water heaters have the conditions necessary for this disease to flourish. By switching to tankless water heaters it will eliminate the conditions that breed this disease because the water is only heated at the moment of use. In tankless water heaters the water in the pipes cools down when water is not being used eliminating any potential for Legionnaire’s disease. This is yet another benefit of using tankless water heaters.

Tankless water heaters are the next big thing for today’s household! There are many benefits of Tankless Water heaters.

What do these numbers mean?

1. The percent annual savings using a gas tankless water heater over a traditional tank system is 50% or $375
2. This amount ($375) is equal to the cost of an average mid-size tankless water heater. Please note: Installation costs were found to be comparable for both tank and tankless systems, ~$150.
3. In addition there is the potential for tax credits for any tankless water heater. (Please visit http://www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm for more information )

4. Given the longer life of a tankless water heater at 22 years versus a tank system 10 years there is the potential of saving over $4,000 over the long term.
Notes:

1. The incoming water temperature from which the Department of Energy (DOE) calculations are made, has been established at 57F. In many parts of the U.S. one does not normally experience inlet temperatures this cost year round however, we used 57F as our inlet temperature. 110 oF is the average household hot water operating temperature. This translates to 53 degrees of temperature rise for both tank and tankless water heating systems
2. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (July 2006) the average American household consumes 87 gallons of hot water per day
3. Average cost of electricity for the United States at the time of writing, is $0.11 kWh, as per the DOE.
4. Based on a DOE report July 2006.
